In the second letter of Peter to the Christians, he warns them about false teachers. He talks about people who don't believe in Jesus, who don't believe He is coming and who mock Christians for their beliefs. Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created (2 Peter 3:3-4 NLT).
Peter gives us a glimpse at what is happening in the world today. There are people mocking our faith. They point out that nothing has changed since Jesus ascended to heaven about 2000 years ago. Man is still man. We still have war. We still have famine. We still have poverty. We still have sickness and disease. We still have horrible people. We still have murder. We still have rape. We still have theft. We still have liars. Nothing has changed. They mock Christians by saying: And you believe all this stuff? You really believe that there is some invisible person in the sky who's going to return and take you to heaven? They mock the very existence of Jesus.
Then Peter goes on to say: They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed (2 Peter 3:5-7 NLT).
Peter also makes a startling accusation about false teachers. 2 Peter 2:1-3 (NLT) says: But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves. Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed.
This is currently happening in the Christian world we live in today. We have false teachers that twist the message of the church and of our religion. They promote all kinds of things; alternative beliefs, Oriental beliefs, Asian beliefs, ancient doctrines and ancient traditions. They use Christ, they use the words of Christ, they have the appearance of godliness and righteousness, but they don't preach the truth.
The truth is already here. If you have a Bible, you have the truth of Christ in your hands. You don't need to listen to these false prophets or seek the truth in alternative beliefs or false teachers. We have to stand up for the truth. We have to speak our minds and we have to speak the truth, faith and our obedience in Christ so the world will know to Whom we belong and Whose Name we wear.
