Bible Toolbox - Steve Zimmerman 19 Des 2018

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) says: But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Opposed to the fruits of the spirit, is the sins of human nature, which Paul explains in verse 19-21: When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God (NLT)

These days we hear a lot of people hating other people - they hate one another seemingly for no reason. We have a right to be angry - with all the corruption and crime in our country. It seems, however, that we have no baseline for our anger. We get angry over anything. We fly off the handle for any silly little thing - when a politician or commentator says something we don't like, when our team loses or for any trivial thing that we don't like. This is not how we, as Christians, should act. We have to be careful of our conduct. Yes, you can have an opinion. Yes, you can state your opinion, but you also have to listen to somebody else's opinion as patiently as they listen to yours.

We have to beware against the sins of human nature, so that we can cultivate and grow the fruits of the spirit in our lives.

There is no law against joy. There is no law against happiness or peace. There is no law against patience or love or kindness or goodness or faithfulness. If we want to have the righteous life, if we want to show the world that we belong to Christ, these things will grow within us. They will come to fruition.

We need to show love to one another. Love is the motivation to serve. It is a service of sympathy, empathy, compassion, hospitality and sacrifice. The source of our joy is God. We have life in His name. We live and move because of Him. He has blessed us. He has brought us out of the darkness into life. He has promised us a home that is far beyond anything we can think or even imagine. We have peace as well. The fruit of the Spirit is peace. Peace can't be negotiated.
